I happen to know that the answer is "Meeting an entire room full of illustrators whose work you admire."

Today, my intrepid friend Lisa (first-grade teacher extraordinaire) and I schlepped to Haverford, PA to attend "The Art of Illustration: A Children's Book Fair" where the following illustrators were officially in attendance:

Gene Barretta - Now and Ben/Jack the Tripper
Brian Biggs- Roscoe Riley Rules/ Shredderman Series
Nick Bruel- Bad Kitty/ Poor Puppy
E.B. Lewis- Coming on Home Soon/Across the Alley
Bob McLeod- Superhero ABC
Lisa Papp – My Mom’s Wedding/ P is for Princess
Robert Papp – Titanicat/ The Scarlet Stocking Spy
Matt Phelan- The New Girl/ Very Hairy Bear
Deborah Kogan Ray- Wanda Gag: The Girl Who Loved to Draw
Roger Roth-The American Story/The Mary Celeste
Judy Schachner- Skippyjohn Jones/Grannyman
David Wiesner- Flotsam/ Tuesday
Kaethe Zemach-Eating Up Gladys/Just Enough and Not Too Much

I also got to see Adam Rex (and meet his lovely wife), who were in attendance to hear Brian Biggs give his presentation. Brian's presentation rocked, and folks looking for an illustrator (soon to be an author/illustrator) for school visits would all be thrilled with Brian. No lie. And I got to hear the tail/tale end of Nick Bruehl's presentation, as he read from Bad Kitty and talked a bit about his new Bad Kitty chapter books. I also spoke with E.B. Lewis (while he signed books for me - good lord, but I love that man's artwork) and David Wiesner, who signed the copy of Flotsam I'd just purchased from the lovely folks at Children's Book World.

Oh. And I lined up at least one interview for the near future here at Writing and Ruminating. As long as a notoriously Bad Kitty doesn't interfere!

Sigh...what a wonderful day. I have a crush on E.B. Lewis's art. Or on E.B. Lewis. Whatever.

Both. He was decidedly a good-looking man (and a sharp dresser!), and his artwork is completely swoon-inducing. Wait until you see the art in the two new books he's got coming out!

I know! (I may have been the only "regular citizen" who accosted Adam Rex - I'd met him once before, so I knew who he was at once. I'm so glad, too, since I got to congratulate him on the success of some of his recent projects.)

Oh, that reminds me that I've been wanting to move The True Meaning of Smeckday to the top of my pile.

Sounds like a heavenly day!

Ooo. That's right near friends of ours AND Roscoe Riley Rules is a HUGE hit in my house of 2 reluctant readers. We're anxiously (not) waiting for March when the next one is released. Sounds like a great time.

Are you coming to Nashua?

I am coming. And sending you my much-delayed MS in today's mail (10 pages of gnomes, no less). Can't wait to see you again!

Oh - and Brian Biggs was absolutely amazing doing his presentation. Talk about a great guy!
