Today's news brings word that Carol Ann Duffy has been named the first-ever female Poet Laureate for Great Britain and, evidently, the first openly gay poet laureate in Britain as well. If her name sounds at all familiar to you, it may be because of my post last September, entitled "Why Carol Ann Duffy is My Hero". After her poem "Education for Leisure" was removed from the GCSE syllabus used to prepare kids for their A-levels, she wrote another poem entitled "Mrs. Schofield's GCSE", directly calling out one of the people who were pleased to have her poem (which deals with rage and hints at knife violence) removed from the test prep materials.

You can read "Mrs. Schofields GCSE" and "Education for Leisure" at the end of this article.

Should you be looking for a poem, may I suggest one of the 33 poems I posted during National Poetry Month?

somehow i missed your post last september, but what a great response to the censorship issue. or is the hypocrisy issue? nothing like shakespeare to answer the call.

Professor Fate! *icon love*

I don't know that I'd have the balls to actually call someone out by name like that, but I sure admired her for doing it, and for not taking censorship sitting down.

Ooo, yes, ballsy, indeed. There are too many commas in that sentence.

Thanks for this. I didn't know this fabulous news.

I just found this news out yesterday(!) and I was thrilled as well!
And also the news of the death of a past consideration for poet laureate of Britain, UA Fanthorpe saddened me deeply.
Thanks for the links to Ms. Duffy's poems- I am not as familiar with her as I should be...;)
