Team Tilney for the win!

Hey guys - you all know what a huge fan I am of Jane Austen and her novels, yes? Remember when we spent "August at the Abbey" back in 2009 and read through Northanger Abbey? Remember how charming Mr. Henry Tilney is? Remember how the Old Spice guy made a video for me? (*imagines the sound of a needle skidding off an LP in your minds just now*)

Behold this video from the good Janeites who are on Team Tilney:

"I HAVE A PUPPY." LOL!

As Austen wrote in Volume II, Chapter 8 of Emma (the novel we'll be starting on May 1st), "silly things do cease to be silly if they are done by sensible people in an impudent way."

Team Tilney is helmed by Margaret C. Sullivan, author of The Jane Austen Handbook and a friend from my local JASNA chapter. She also runs Austenblog, and was the Executive Producer of the video.

It was so very clever that I couldn't NOT post it. Also, it made me laugh aloud, and with the state of the world these days, I needed it - and figured others might too.

That has so many great inside jokes. The line about the muslin ... and how HE loves to dance!

Yeah, he had me at "muslin."

"If your gentleman were . . . 'more nice than wise' . . . " And he makes it sound like it's not a bad thing, even though Eleanor is actually giving him a dig when she says it.

Hi everyone--this is Mags, Executive Producer. ;-) Glad you liked the video! Here's the story behind it: last year for the JASNA Annual Meeting in Portland, the theme for which was Northanger Abbey, several of us got together to put on a presentation called Team Tilney Explains It All, in which we planned to explain why we think Henry Tilney is the best Austen hero and also to refute the many scurrilous falsehoods being circulated about him. We planned to quote from the book a great deal, and decided that it would be really cool if we had an actual Henry to read his lines. Lynn Marie Macy, a playwright, actress, and director who has written a really wonderful stage adaptation of NA, put out the word in Portland, and we hired a wonderful local actor, Joe Homes, to play Henry. He entered into the thing (which we meant to be silly and fun as well as informative) with great gusto and really "got" Henry. At one point, we were exchanging e-mails and Heather Laurence, one of our teammates, jokingly wrote a partial parody of the Old Spice ad. We of course asked her to expand it, and had him do the ad at the beginning of the presentation. It was extremely popular, and when Joe visited Lynn Marie in NYC later in the year, they arranged to film it. And you see the result! So I really had nothing to do with it except to beg them to make the video and beg Heather to expand her joking e-mail. Well, I did instigate the whole thing from the beginning, so, yes, I guess Executive Producer is just about right. ;-)
