One poetry collection from last year that I really admire is Nancy Bo Flood's collection, COWBOY UP! Ride the Navajo Rodeo, of which the good folks at Wordsong were kind enough to send me a copy. The book features photographs of ranchers and riders of all ages, and the enthusiasm for the rodeo pervades the entire collection, which pairs poems with nonfiction narrative describing the importance of the rodeo to the Navajo, and the various rodeo events, which include bronco riding, calf roping, bull riding, trick riding, and even sheep riding.

The book is a hit from its end pages, which feature a montage of photos of various rodeo aficionados, containing the following poem:

Rodeo Rider

I want to be a rodeo rider--
a barrel racing,
    crazy bull chasing,
lasso slinging,
    wild calf roping,
bronco busting,
    mutton tumbling,
rodeo rider.

A perfect addition to any library, school or otherwise, and an interesting way of conveying what happens at the rodeo through mixed media: poems, narrative, and photography.
