After - a Poetry Friday post

I wrote this poem years ago, following flooding in the Midwest. I offer it today for my friends and relatives in the South.

After
by Kelly Ramsdell Fineman

I've got peace like a river,
I've got peace like a river,
I've got peace like a river in my soul.— African American spiritual

After the storm,
hissing, roiling waters burst through
sandbag levees; the river
brings no peace at all.
Waters carry death and carnage,
waters carry stories and belongings,
waters carry worry and fear,
hope and need and new beginnings.

After the flood,
after waters recede, settling between
banks, whispering of dreams and desires,
even before debris can be cleared,
shoots spring up from sated earth
skyward; like hope, eternal.
New-washed land shows signs of life.
Et in terra pax.

"after" thoughts
Love the Latin...love the fast-pace! ...Mostly love the hopeful afterwards! God bless you!

Poetry Friday
Kelly, I enjoyed how you moved your poem from sadness to hopefulness carried by the water's flow.

This is a child's response, but must still say it seems unfair--that flooding in the south & fires in the northeast. It's been a tough time for many this summer into fall this year. Nice that you end with some peace and hope.

I understand your point - if only some of that rain had gone elsewhere. I am grateful that we've had an okay year here in NJ where I live, but very worried for so much of the country that is being affected by what I assume is climate change.

It is hard to bear witness to our world unravelling...
