Woodpeckers

Today, I had a red-bellied woodpecker in my back yard.

First, a confession. The word "woodpecker" makes me laugh. Yes, for the reason you suspect.

But seeing the woodpecker in my back yard, I thought I'd share a short poem my grandfather used to recite:

The woodpecker pecked at the woodhouse door.
He pecked and he pecked 'til his pecker got sore.

Now, if one were British, this would seem a-okay. Because over there, "pecker" means nose or mouth. And the phrase "Keep your pecker up" is an admonition to keep one's chin up, not some sort of sexual command. But being American, and knowing that pecker is American slang for "penis," I snort with laughter over the keeping up of peckers and/or the woodpecker poem.

Yes. I am that juvenile.

There is a big woodpecker (don't know what kind) who has chosen our neighbor's house as his prime pecking place at 6:00 am. It is SOOOO loud. I went out there this morning, clapping and bringing the dog, hoping to scare him off, because it wakes the kids up!

Re: do you think....
Woodpeckers are funnier than woodcocks. And probably unrelated. Now, shuttlecocks? Shuttlecocks are funny.

My grandfather used to say that poem frequently when I was your kids' age -- I didn't get the dual meaning until much, much later in life.

Re: Funny. . .
A friend emailed me today to say that woodpeckers don't make her giggle, but titmouses/titmice do.
