Five things on a Friday

This particular five things is all about my younger daughter, M, who turns 16 tomorrow.

1. M is on her first build for Habitat for Humanity today. I'm so proud of her for participating in community service, and Habitat is one of the charities that has long been close to my heart.

2. She's doing quite a lot of community service, actually - she's also part of her high school's "Adopt a Grandparent" program, which means that she'll be playing bingo with people at a senior center once a month. (She couldn't go today because she was selected to participate in the Habitat build; otherwise, she'd have been a bingo-playing fool.)

3. She's been doing stuff for the F.O.P. Christmas party as well - largely making decorations, but on Sunday she will go to the hotel where the event is being held to help decorate, and on Monday she's one of the kids who will be helping at the actual party. (Not everyone gets to go - you have to make all the meetings to even qualify.)

4. Plus she's a founding member of her school's Go Green for the Greater Good club (they recycle electronics).

5. M is now 6 feet tall. (No lie.) Strange but true: When she was 5'10-1/2", she was embarrassed about her height and didn't want to grow any taller. She slouched and moped. Now that she's actually 6' tall, she's totally at peace with it. She stands tall. She even wears heels to dressy events. I love that about her. I also love how confident she is that she's going to meet and marry a 6'10" Englishman someday.

Oh, these are wonderful -- happy day to M!!

Side note: my second cousin is 6 feet tall, and she also struggled with it early on. I'm not sure she wears heels, but she has come into her height now with pride :)

Thanks for the good wishes! And I'm really thrilled that M's at peace with her height - she's stuck with it either way, and it's much better not to be mortified about it!

Wow! Those are all awesomely fantastic things! Including the 6' part. I welcome her to the club. :) I can empathise with the awkward slumping - I perfected the art of standing with one hip cocked and a knee bent to take a foot off my height through most of junior high before I got over it. And I wish her luck on finding that 6'10" Englishman. :)

She actually saw a 6'10" guy profiled as part of some special on TV, so such a creature actually exists - as for the meeting/marrying part, that's a much tougher quest. I'm glad you got over your height issue!!

Happy Birthday, M! I hope she has TOO MUCH FUN.

And Kelly, howsabout a 6' 4" Cincy boy? Except he would have to stop playing video games for more than a half an hour at a time.

How old is he? Because she might be all over that. Although she has a strange bias against Ohio after her father dragged her to a family reunion there a few years ago.

Happy birthday, M!

Stand tall is good advice for life, too.

And now, I'm hearing that song and it's ALL YOUR FAULT! ("Stand tall, don't you fall, oh for god's sake don't you do something foolish". Or something like that. The internet assures me it's by Burton Cummings.)

Good for M for finding peace with her height (been there, although I was never ever allowed to slouch). 6'10" Englishmen, though....

My BFF (and ex) is 6'6" and I've met a few guys taller than him, so they are definitely out there. I'm so glad she's embracing her height. I'm only 5'10" but most of my siblings are much taller. I know it was hard on my younger sister for awhile, but now that she's approaching 6'4", she stands tall and proud.

M and I were just talking about how when she was 5'10" and 5'11" she really didn't like it, but somehow she ended up completely at peace at 6'. My first true love (and friend) is 6'4", and hubby & I have a good friend who's 6'5", plus M has second cousins who are 6'6" - 6'8", so we know tall guys like that exist. (Now, her finding one who is British is the tougher part!)

You would totally love M. Maybe we'll all get to meet up someday. (And I rather think that 6'4" is probably taller enough, really - then again, one of my favorite people on the planet is that tall!)
