Five Things on a Friday

1. I am not a member of the YA Mafia. That I know of. Not that I would say if I were - after all, the rules for the YA Mafia are probably like the rules for Fight Club, and we all know what the first rule is. Also, I remain surprised at how large tea-cup sized tempests can become.

2. My LJ friends are costing me money. Not that I'm complaining, exactly, but a trip to the bookstore today resulted in my purchase of Sean Griswold's Head by Lindsey Leavitt, The Vespertine by Saundra Mitchell and Noodle and Lou by Liz Garton Scanlon. Plus I bought Demonglass by Rachel Hawkins for M, since she so loved Hex Hall. *idly wonders if Rachel has a blog - will check it later*

3. Tonight! I am going to see the swan! No, not Natalie Portman, but Swan Lake. Angela De Groot and I are heading into Philly to see the Pennsylvania Ballet production. It's one of Angela's favorite ballets (she's seen it several times) and one I've always wanted to see (I've not seen it yet, ever). I'm very much looking forward to it! (Hence all the exclamation points.)

4. There are quite a number of movies out today that I want to see - specifically, Beastly, Rango, and The Adjustment Bureau. Why did they all open on the same day after weeks of movies I couldn't care less about?

5. I just bought the DeVotchKa CD, 100 Lovers, in large part because it contains fun accordion parts. I am a sucker for the accordion, as it turns out, which explains why I bought the single "Stereo Love" by Edward Maya and Vika Jigulina a few weeks back. Of course, it helped that my local B&N was blaring DeVotchKa in between tracks by Fitz & the Tantrums (and we already know I like my FATT).

I am quite excited about seeing Swan Lake - I've seen The Swan Princess, which I quite liked (a non-Disney cartoon made of win) and I saw Billy Elliot, which had a bit of the swan at the end, but I've never seen the actual ballet. *is excited - but wishes you lived closer*

I wish you could have come, too - that would have made things even more awesome!

I love Tchaikovsky as well - the Swan, the Nutcracker, symphonies, sonatas . . .

CANNOT WAIT FOR DEMONGLASS to make it here!!!!!

This YA Mafia thing is ... just ... really ... dumb, I'm afraid. And yet: teapot? Check. Tempest? Check... Much like with the CHarlie Sheen thing, methinks we should all just LOOK AWAY...

Re: tanita says:
M was quite excited to find Demonglass when she got home from school today. (The cover is - again - made of win.)

Re: the YA Mafia thing: I really thought Holly Black's post said it all, and cannot believe anyone is actually arguing that such a thing exists. *headdesk*

I suggest reading Holly Black's blog post on the subject, which will (a) tell you what it is and (b) put the issue to rest quite nicely.

#1 -- LOL -- I just heard of this today and have been reading through various posts on it. Very entertaining (and a little scary by some of the reviewers).

Have a great time tonight :D

It was a lovely night out!

altho, "YA Mafia" would make a rockin' name for a band. featuring accordions. just sayin'...
Mar. 5th, 2011 04:36 am (UTC)
Yes! "YA Mafia" simply cries out for accordions!

Ooh, have fun at the ballet. I see you're keeping up with your 2011 goal of going out to cultural events/concerts. I'm very interested in the Adjustment Bureau, but will likely end up at Rango with the kids!

Ebert gave Rango four stars, so I think you won't necessarily mind. Although really, if Johnny Depp is involved, I'd like to see him, and not just hear him.

I made it to two concerts and a Shakespeare play last month, and I've already been to the ballet in March - not too shabby! (Though I am behind on museum-like things, but I know where I want to go!)

I do not like the idea of chocolate in rain form, but I do like the idea of free chocolate. Naturally.

So that's what you meant
I had no idea what you were talking about re' mafia. I've just finished reading Holly Black's post and some other others ones. Oh for goodness sakes. People!

Anyway. I can't wait to read Sean's Head. Right after I finish Flash Burnout.

Re: So that's what you meant
Flash Burnout is so good. And I saw Mermaid's Mirror at the store today and got sad all over again, knowing there won't be any more LK Madigan books in the world. So unfair!

The YA Mafia thing is fairly ridiculous - seems like some folks just want to stir up trouble, though, so they decide to sling baseless allegations about.

I want to see the ballet some day!
Mar. 5th, 2011 04:40 am (UTC)
It was very good!

I am totally part of the YA Mafia. You know it.
Mar. 5th, 2011 04:40 am (UTC)
Of course I know it. I was just keeping it on the down low. As we do.

Re: Likes accordion?
As if having one of my favorite people as a guitarist weren't enough . . .
