Lily's Ghosts by Laura Ruby

I read Lily's Ghosts based on a recommendation from sruble, and all I can say is, "thanks for the recommendation."
Okay, if you've read my book reviews before, you know that's not all I can say, nor is it all I will say.

In this book, Lily finds herself in Cape May with her mother, where Lily meets a cute Greek boy (and who doesn't like a cute Greek boy?) and stumbles onto a mystery involving the ghosts of dead relatives.

This book is an engaging and entertaining read, even though it changes tone rather unexpectedly mid-stream. Why do I say that? Let me count the ways: the mother, who is initially portrayed as a free-spirited airhead but morphs into something entirely different during the course of the novel, to the point that the happy ending runs counter to the "type" established at the start of the book. The beginning of the book sets up a light-hearted, humorous tone that makes you think it's a romantic comedy for young readers, but it diverts to a rather serious mystery involving threats and guns before things are over. The serious scenes are eventually toned down a bit by the involvement of several ghosts, but still, I would never in a million years have predicted the plot line.

And yet. Despite pointing out what may well be flaws in the story, I'd still heartily recommend this one for 10-12 year old girls. Yeah, it's a girl book, and not just because the MC is a girl. Boys wouldn't be able to stomach the "does the cute Greek boy like me" stuff, or the "trouble with my mother" stuff. But middle-grade girls will eat this one up. And probably ask for more.

I will be standing in line to buy Laura Ruby's new book, The Wall and the Wing, when it becomes available early next year. And she's got a few other books for older readers in the works for later release dates too.

Be sure to check out her website. The new MG fantasy comes out first, but she has two other books (one YA and one adult) under contract as well. And there's good info on them on her site.
