What a day!

Yesterday was a banner sort of day. Not that I, y'know, have a banner for it, but still . . .

So many happy things happened that I feel a list coming on:

1. S found a prom dress. Yes, in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She tried it on in black, even though she doesn't usually like black, and then we ordered it in white. The dress we ordered is the last white one in her size in the entire U.S.A. Crazy. It will be shipped to us soon. It was definitely Meant To Be: one of the only stores specializing in prom dresses in the Charleston area is about 10 minutes from my brother's house. Out of all the dresses in the store, this was the only one she had any interest in trying on. And then my usually (highly, highly) indecisive kid decided that this was THE DRESS. I even made her leave the store for a few minutes, but it just felt wrong to her to leave that dress, so we ordered it. *prances about with relief that prom dress shopping is OVER!*

2. S decided that she LOVES College of Charleston even more than the other schools she was interested in. As I may have mentioned, the Admissions Office let us down a bit by refusing to add us to a tour, but my wonderful brother hooked us up with a friend of a friend - a graduating senior who used to give campus tours during the summer, was an RA for three years, and who definitely knew her way around the school. It didn't hurt that she knew so many people as we were walking around, because S is highly social, and seeing how many people knew one another gave her a good vibe. Plus the weather was extremely cooperative - about 80 and sunny, S's notion of a perfect day, and seeing girls tanning in bikinis and guys playing soccer in a shirts & skins pickup game in the park near campus really made her grin.

Also, everyone was terribly friendly. And there were cute guys out and about (not that it's how one ought to judge a college campus, but, well, you know how it goes) - the four guys she asked for directions to George Street lit up like Christmas had come early when she talked to them, which didn't hurt, either. And the girls were mostly dressed in stuff that S would wear herself, so she could totally see herself being there.

On two occasions after our tour when we stopped for a moment and looked perplexed, students stopped to ask if we needed help finding something. The first one was a hot guy with a British accent (cue both my girls swooning) and the second was a really nice freshman girl who not only escorted us where we needed to go, but also talked with S nonstop about the school and offered an opinion on unisex vs. co-ed dorms for freshman year. Seriously, I couldn't have scripted the day better.

3. I met my future sister-in-law and niece. My brother has been dating a nice single mother, and the girls and I met both of our future relatives at dinner last night. We are all more than a little in love with my new niece, who is 10 months old and just adorable. (We liked her mother quite a bit, too - but CUTE BABY IS CUTE!) It is fabulous to see my brother so happy. He is, in fact, so happy that he is practically skipping about like Buddy the Elf:

I'm in (almost) full-on Mom mode just now. I am, however, enjoying a few Lisa Kleypas novels whilst here.

Such nice things! Even with my daughter as a freshmen I was holding out a silly hope that she'd be invited to go to prom because I can't WAIT to help her pick out a dress. Some of that enthusiasm may be because we live near a Ross store and they have tons of great party dresses for great prices.

The whole prom thing is more of a headache than I ever expected it to be, to be honest.

Right now that life is moody and cranky because she's BORED and, apparently, unable to amuse herself. *feels like a failure*

It is indeed!

I thought of you as we circled the beltway today. Not that I'm 100% sure where you live, just that you're there somewhere!

Then you would've loved the carful of hot Australian men we saw on the ride home today. Who were all (at the very least) topless and ripped.
