On the back porch

Remember when I said I was on the back porch of the barn/house in which we're staying here in Kent, Connecticute, working on a new song for my YA romance novel project? Well, Angela De Groot angeladegroot documented it with this photograph. Here I am looking pensive as I try to figure out what comes next in this particular song.

Turns out I've written a ballad in 6/8 time, with a lovely walking bass part. It borrows some of its lyrics from Matthew Arnold's poem, "Dover Beach", about which I once blogged, although most of them are mine. I'm currently quite in love with it. Hopefully I'll remember it well enough to record it when I get home. And then I hope I still like it when I hear it on playback.

I LOVE this photo of you. I vote that in addition to recording your new song, you print out and frame this photo.

Maybe someday. You know, when the book sells, and I've mastered my F bar-chord.

It's sweet of you to be amazed, especially since you don't know if I can even play . . . (I can, but only in a middling sort of way. *sighs*)

Thanks! It was a sweet guitar, too - a Martin. Much better action than my guitar here at home.

The audio clips I have thus far are not fit for sharing - I've managed to record audio files of all three songs, but I'm doing it using a headset microphone. Eventually I hope to have software for PC that's kinda-sorta like Garage Band, and I'll probably score a better mic, which will be a big help. But that's a down-the-road sort of thing.

look at YOU!
Guitar-playing poet queen!

You rock! Your guitar (what kind?) rocks! Your "back-porch" album cover shot rocks!

And hello? 6/8 time with walking bass line...did I say, you rock? Well, I meant...

YOU ROCK!

Re: look at YOU!
Funny boy! The guitar I'm using there is a Martin, and it lives in the barn where we were staying. It's far, far nicer than my Yamaha.

I love that picture. How cool that you write songs to go with your stories.

This is the first time I've done this, but it makes sense for this particular project. The MC's love interest is in a band, and she gets to hear his new songs - and sometimes the reader gets to hear some of them, too. Since the story is currently in first person from the perspective of the MC, it makes sense to write actual songs.

I'm not certain the songs are fantastic, although I'm pretty sure they don't completely suck. I was a music major in college, which included a bunch of composition classes, but it's not my forte. Still, it totally makes sense for this particular project.
