1. Dear Hackers:

Why? Why do you exist? What do you get out of hacking into an email account to forward batches of email for medications and scams to people? I mean, maybe there's money in it, but how is there anything like job satisfaction in what you do?

Perplexed and pissed off,

2. Dear Hotmail:

I swear, you're as bad as Facebook. When you "new and improved" yourself, you added a bunch of bells and whistles to my account. I just today figured out that they included letting people see a bunch of my information, including my contacts list. And only because I clicked "advanced" under privacy settings, since the general privacy settings looked benignly private. I hold you responsible for the fact that my account has been hacked - TWICE - in the past month despite me changing my password.

Unhappily yours,

Kiva - loans that change lives

I know it's a pain to switch but Gmail is far and away a better e-mail package then hotmail or yahoo for more reasons than I can list. I know several folks personally who have had their hotmail accounts hacked, I know 0 that have had their gmail hacked.

It goes without saying but...your password also needs to have upper case, lower case, symbols and numbers in it.

So sorry this happened, the frustration is ugly.

Re: Ugh
Funny thing is, my most recent password had that combo - and isn't anything guessable. Grr.

Other funny thing is, it's not even my primary email account. I have, um, five email accounts through three different providers. However, it's the one I use for listservs, so it would be a real pain to have to switch it. Ten years with that account and it just now got hacked. Twice.

I am considering wiping all or most of my contacts there for that very reason.

the evil virus rides in on the tails of some email, possibly from someone you really know, and it contacts everyone you've ever emailed. There's not a ton you can do it about it, actually, and even the previously-held-sacred belief that "Macs are safe against viruses" just ain't true anymore.

we are in a new web world where we should all be suspicious of every stinkin' e-message, unfortunately. maybe we'll return to paper and postage? *shudders*

I do like getting snail mail, so it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, but man . . . what a pain in the ass this has been! It resulted in a funny email last time - one of the batches or emails sent out was for something to help men with their erections, and a lovely elderly gent from the Jane Austen Society emailed me to say that "any man [I] chose to smile upon would need no further inducement." LOL!

lol! very sweet. =)
One of my old email addresses got hacked last year. I found out because my dad called - he'd gotten one of those emails trying to sell him little blue pills as well. :^/

I hear you - the same hackers got into my gmail account over the weekend. Google shut the account down for 24 hours and made me re-verify the account and change my password. Same deal - hundreds of emails for some prescription or something.

tanita says:
Ugh, sorry. My Yahoo account has never been hacked; neither has my Gmail, but I don't use them very much, and everything is forwarded to my main account. They are seriously messing with you! >.
