The Smithereens

Intrepid friend Lisa invited me on an outing to see the Smithereens in concert - it was a free lunchtime concert sponsored by WXPN, a local NPR station. To be honest, I hadn't listened to them since the 80s, although I really loved their songs "Blood & Roses" and "Behind the Wall of Sleep" back in the day.

Turns out I still love those songs, which were two of the eight or so that we heard them play. Thanks to a parking snafu, we missed the first 8 minutes or so, but boy, were we glad we got there to hear the rest. One of the guitarists (Jim Babjak, who plays lead) was ill, but Pat DiNizio (lead vocals & rhythm guitar), Severo Jornacion (bass) and Dennis Diken (drums) put on a high-energy, rockin' show, demonstrating that guys in their 50s still have mad skillz - both musically and performance-wise.

Their encore version of TV's Batman theme, complete with incredible drum breaks, brought the house down, and their new songs sound pretty great, too. Definitely a good day - especially since Lisa and I followed it up with lunch at the White Dog Cafe.
