A minus and a plus

On the minus side, I've been coughing ever since I cleaned out my walk-in closet last week. (Oh the dust you will breathe!)

On the plus side, I figured out of the weekend that the cough is a reactive airway issue (some call it asthma, especially when it becomes chronic - I had months of severe reactive airway 11 years ago, and then . . . nothing for a long, long time).

On the minus side, when I called the doctor's office on Monday, they were already sold out of same-day visits, and I was told to call back yesterday. An hour or so after that phone call, I threw my back out. It's not even a good story - took one step and all was well, took the next and my lower back went into spasm. Even the time that I threw it out sneezing in the shower is slightly more interesting.

On the plus side, this meant that when I went to the doctor yesterday, I could cover both issues - the palpable swelling in my lower right back and the continuing cough.

On the minus side, my favorite doctor (for the past 18 years) left the practice to pursue another healthcare option, and my favorite nurse practitioner also left in order to take care of her mother. I was assigned some doctor I'd never heard of, let alone met.

On the plus side, I loved my new (tall, dark & handsome) young doctor, who confirmed that I have reactive airway (hello inhaler!) and that it's just a muscle spasm (an impressively distinct one at that), and prescribed stretching to help it out. And diazepam if I feel I need it. (I feel that I don't.) All the tai chi and yoga I've been doing has me in decent shape, and I've been able to do lots of stretches to help work it out. My family doctor even cleared me to go to tai chi class yesterday, where I was able to do everything but one or two of the warm-up exercises.

If I were so inclined, I could focus on my not-insubstantial minuses just now, but that's not how I roll. (In fact, the doctor said I'm one of the most cheerful patients he's ever met - isn't that sweet?) After all, I think it's pretty clear that the pluses weigh a lot more.

And so, in a bit, I'll turn off this heating pad, move Kismet off my lap, hit the shower, and then head off to tai chi class.

Tell me what's up with you, won't you?

Oooh, gotta love tall, dark and handsome doctors!! Lucky you! ;)

I only got about 4 hours sleep last night, so I have nothing else to say except, uh, Good morning Kelly! *yawn*

4 hours is not enough, Miss Lisa - you need a minimum of 6 to be functional! I will hope you have better luck tonight - and/or got a nap today!

Did I mention that the tall, dark & handsome doctor is married and only about 30? (I'd guess even younger based on appearances, but logic dictates that he's in that range . . . )

Yikes! Asthma and muscle spasms and not-insubstantial minuses. Kelly! Eat chocolate!!

Funny, the doctor did not mention chocolate therapy as an option. I will definitely give it a go!

Dr. Dot prescribes eating fabulously well every day, getting too much rest, having as much fun as possible.

On a more mundane note, do you do abs workouts? They can really help with lower back problems.

Dr. Dot is a genius. I've eaten fabulously well this week, gotten a bit too much rest and had as much fun as possible and I am in a FANTABULOUS mood - sore back and nagging cough notwithstanding.

The answer is that I do some abs, but not enough - will work on that.

Hope the minuses (as opposed to sinuses!) clear up soon, but I keep thinking of you with sweet little Kismet in your lap. Purrrrrrr.........

Sweet Kismet is indeed adorable. You would love her, Lorraine - such a cuddler and so, so sweet.

Despite my present health issues, I've rarely been happier. Go figure.

My dad used to sing this song:
Yay, boo, yay, boo
Lots of fun to do
If you like it holler YAY!
If you don't you holler BOOO!!!

Your post reminded me of the song. :)

Oh, and, not as good as a tall, dark and handsome new doc or a cuddly kitten, but...

True that - a tall, dark & handsome new doc and a cuddly kitten are indeed aces - but the sparkles definitely helped!

I want to know the tune. Will you call and sing it to me?

I tried to find it for you online, but all I got was the lyrics. :(

Oh OUCH for the muscle spasm and the reactive airway issue. But I'm so glad about all the positives. *gentle hugs*

Wow, Kelly, I'm impressed that you stayed on the bright side. just one of those things would have set me in a tailspin. I'm doing well, since you asked. Writing like crazy on a new MG novel. Feel better soon!

On the plus side, I really love your icon. On the minus side, I hope it's not my ass you're going to be kicking.
