"Happy, Snappy, Sappy" by Daniel Handler

In addition to doing stuff with with my kids and doing tai chi, I've been cleaning my house. Not your typical cleaning, either, but major cleaning, including lots of trips to Goodwill and the like. Trust me when I say that it's long overdue. And that part of it is the process of me reclaiming my whole house as my own. (For those of you who missed the prior mention, my husband and I are in the process of splitting up, and are nearly divorced. But I digress.)

Today, I went through several issues of Poetry magazine that I'd held onto for various reasons - and one of them held "Happy, Snappy, Sappy: There's space in the living room for poetry," an essay by Daniel Handler (aka "Lemony Snicket") about reading poetry for pleasure. Here's how that essay starts:

If you were to walk into my living room on some weekend night, that would be creepy. But before I stood up alarmed and demanded to know what you were doing there, you would see me in a big black leather chair that, I’ve been told, is too big for the room. I’d be all dressed up, and reading poetry.

Enjoy the house claiming :) (I obviously can't read between the lines, as I didn't realize what you meant by your previous post...anyway, I hope that things are amicable, if nothing else!)

Things are entirely amicable. And thank you - the house claiming is going along quite well.

Kelly! I missed the reference in the previous post, too. I hope things wrap up in the best possible way -- you're in my thoughts!

I'll end with a totally random thought: I am slightly traumatized by the fact that Lemony Snicket is younger than me. It's okay that LS/Daniel Handler is smarter, but YOUNGER? Bah.

OMG - Daniel Handler is younger than I am, too! *is traumatized along with you*

Thank you for the good wishes.

Thanks for sharing that essay--I must remember that as an approach to reading poetry.

Enjoy the housecleaning. I look forward to the day when BD's room is vacant and I can take it over and totally declutter. But it won't be this year.

Decluttering was difficult, and then the cleaning . . .

I was extremely fortunate to have a friend come over and shove me out of the room when the dusting and sweeping had to be done - I have a dust allergy, and following a major cold earlier in the summer, I had a recurrence of a reactive airway issue I hadn't had to deal with in about 11 years, so having help with the major dust issues (and a respirator/mask to wear) really was a lifesaver. Almost literally.

I'm so sorry to hear about your divorce. (((hugs)))
Best wishes with the reclaiming. I need to do a deep clean of my house just to scale things back and declutter. I am being overrun with "stuff."
Thank you for the link to Daniel Handler. That was an interesting read.

Scaling things back is definitely a good thing - it's something I'm doing as I reclaim the place, and I am really happy with the results I'm seeing, even if it is all a lot of work.

there is something marvelous about clearing out stuff and making room for what matters now .... good luck and best wishes to you during these transformative times

Thank you Jen - and what a lovely wish.

And yes, that clearing out/making room thing is just what I'm doing - and it is also good feng shui, as it turns out.

Kelly, it sounds like the cleaning is a good way to make room for all the other many things in your life, and I'm glad you feel you're on a hopeful, open path. The air is nippy here, and such a sense of changing seasons in the air. sending you good thoughts as you move into the next.

I am feeling exceedingly hopeful and optimistic these days. And the temps have finally dropped here, especially at night, with hints of autumn in the air. And I do love autumn. Thank you for the thoughts and good wishes, Jeannine.

Oh, Kelly. I've been absent this summer and had no idea the big changes in your life. But you sound good and positive and full of energy, so I'll just send a hug your way to remind you I'm on your team.

Thank you, Tracy. And may I say that "good and positive and full of energy" comes extremely close to how I'm feeling these days? Again, thanks for your support and for the hug!
