The beginning

Today, I spent (more than) the two hours of time I had with Angela De Groot working on marketing for At the Boardwalk, which comes out early next spring. I still have to finalize my marketing plan, as it turns out, but today I spent my time designing and uploading postcards to be sent to area independent booksellers and some gift shops near the short that also carry books.

The thing is - and there's always a "thing", isn't there? - that my book cover's dimensions are not the same ratio of width and length as the dimensions of postcards. While wider than it is tall, it's taller (proportionally) than a postcard, so I couldn't just upload the .jpg of the cover into Vistaprint and have it fill the front of a postcard.

Ultimately, I solved the problem by creating a postcard in Word - altering the document size and margins, filling the document with a different color (a rich blue), inserting the cover , then adding some information to the front of the postcard to fill it out: ISBN numbers for both the hardcover and the paperback editions of the book, plus the text from the first two-page spread.* The back involved creating columns (so I could have a line between the part I'll write on and the part that gets an address), plus creating a gray & white thumbnail of the cover and typesetting various information - like my name, and the name of the wonderful illustrator, Mónica Armiño, and the name of my wonderful publisher, tiger tales, and the fact that it comes out in Spring of 2012.

*What's that? You say you'd like to know what the text on the first two pages says? Well, here it is then:

At the boardwalk
  by the sea
Days are spent with family
Life relaxes; time is free
At the boardwalk
  by the sea

Boy, do I wish I could show you the spread right now - but it will have to wait for another time. As will my post with the photos from when my books actually arrived last week, since I have temporarily misplaced my camera. (Yeah - my RA flare is still wreaking havoc on things, and it has been a horrible few days. Here's hoping things will improve soon.)

Oooh, can't wait to read more!

I sure hope you feel better soon, Kelly. It sounds like it's tough to get anything done when you have these flare ups.

It is indeed difficult to get a lot done these days - and very, very frustrating. But thank you for the good wishes - and for wanting to read more!!

Thanks Renee! (For whatever reason, LJ forgot to tell me you left a comment, but I found it just now thanks to the need to remove a bit of spam!)
