5 Things on a Friday

Sorry for the temporary communications blackout - I had to take M to look at colleges in New England, and had no internet access while gone. I will put up National Poetry Month posts for the days I've missed, but first, an update on some other stuff:

1. I will be speaking on a panel at the Cherry Hill Public Library in Cherry Hill, NJ on Monday evening (7-9 p.m.), along with Jon Gibbs, Jennifer Hubbard, and Gregory Frost, talking about Writing for Young Readers. I sure hope people show up. If you're at all interested, you can register online, but I'm pretty certain you can just show up as well. We'll be on the lower level in the conference center.

2. I had poems accepted in the New Brunswick Public Library's Poetry Month Anthology. I was sorry not to be able to attend the reading this past Monday night, but I'm thrilled my work is there. I'm looking forward to seeing the collection, however.

3. I'm also looking forward to next month's launch of the steampunk Shakespeare anthology containing my steampunk take on Shakespeare's Sonnet 55. My poem, entitled "Not iron, nor the Difference Engine" is one of 19 poems and works of short fiction appearing in the anthology, which is slated for a May release. Further information on the collection is available in this earlier post.

4. I am delighted to have poems coming out in two different anthologies for children. My poem, "Sea Jelly", will be in The National Geographic Book of Animal Poetry: 200 poems with Photographs that Squeak, Soar, and Roar!, (edited by Children's Poet Laureate J. Patrick Lewis), which will highlight 200 poems with NGS photos. I am delighted to be keeping company with poets such as Shel Silverstein and Robert Frost in that one. According to some online booksellers, that book will release on September 11, 2012.

The other anthology I have a poem in this fall is Dare to Dream . . . Change the World, edited by Jill Corcoran, which will be sold initially through Usborne Books and More, and then later through other vendors (but not Amazon). I'm more than thrilled to be paired up with my friend, Laura Purdie Salas in that one, but it's the full list of poets in the anthology that has me especially gobsmacked. As conceived of by Jill, this collection "pairs biographical and inspirational poems focusing on persons who invented something, stood for something, said something that defied the naysayers and not only changed their lives but the lives of people all over the world." I can't wait to see the full collection!

5. As mentioned earlier in the post, I just got back from New England, where I visited UMass in Amherst and UMaine in Orono with M, who is shopping for colleges. While in Amherst, M and I met up with the always wonderful Jeannine Atkins and drove by Emily Dickinson's house (M wasn't in the mood to stop). We also made a quick stop at Quinnipiac University on the way home.

But it all reminded me that I will be in New England again this weekend, where I'm speaking at the NESCBWI Spring Conference on Sunday afternoon in a workshop session entitled "It's Tricky to Rock a Rhyme: Real Tips You Can Use". While there, I will also be engaging in my first-ever book signing. (I sure hope at least one person stops by my table!) Because the aforementioned M has her Junior Prom on Saturday, I will not be arriving until quite late Saturday evening, but I will be around on Sunday, accompanied by a tall, dark, handsome gentleman. (Yeah - some of you will actually get to meet my beloved!) I am very much looking forward to seeing many of my New England friends!

You are way too busy! Yikes. Glad you got to do a drive by of Emily's house. If M. goes to UMass, we'll do a tour and eat the excellent whole wheat cherry scones from the bakery across from it.

Congratulations on all the poetry appearances coming up!

Sorry I won't be at nescbwi, but I hope I get to see pictures!

I should've shown you a photo of my beloved while we were at Esselon - but it likely would've ticked M off. She really enjoyed meeting you, by the way - and although I can't say for certain that your offer to fight Carrie Jones for the privilege of having her at school in your state was the deciding factor, it certainly didn't hurt - and UMass is currently (firmly) #1 in her book.
