The nice people at Chronicle Books sent me a copy of Twelve Dancing Princesses as retold and illustrated by Brigette Barrager. The illustrations are adorable, and Barrager did a terrific job streamlining the story to make it a bit easier for the younger set to follow.

In the original version, there's much more detail about the enchantment that the princesses are under, including the presence of 12 male suitors. In this version, the princesses are under an enchantment, but dance alone, which still makes sense but avoids messy entanglements. And the revealing/breaking of the spell is simplified as well, again to good effect.

The book came out last year, and I managed to misplace it until some recent housecleaning unearthed it. It's definitely worth a gander for those of you who are (or have young readers who are) into fairy tales and/or dancing and/or princesses. And Chronicle also put out a Princess Matching Game with cards designed by Brigette Barrager, if you like the game-with-book idea.
