Why do blog spammers bother?

It's something I often wonder, as I get notifications of entries on ancient posts, where I arrive to find that someone is trying to sell me knock-off shoes or medications, but with their plethora of links "cleverly" hidden among random strings of text. Sometimes I find there is one spam message on a post, sometimes (quite literally) there are hundreds.

Were you to peruse my blog, you'd never see them, because they need to be unscreened, and I don't unscreen them. Does anyone?

Although . . . this morning I found this lovely bit of oddness tucked near the end of one of the many posts I was deleting, and it read almost like poetry:

I was getting those daily. Disable anonymous comments in your settings. It works.

I don't see a "disable anonymous comments" option. I can have it screen anonymous ones, which it does, but I still see them. Or I can allow "everybody", "nobody", "registered users", or "friends" to comment, but I really didn't want to have to lock it down to "registered users" or "friends", since some friends (and regular readers) aren't actually in either group.

I got a less-detailed but similar explanation from a friend at Facebook, so I think you are correct. Not that I understand what SEO is, apart from it being a Good Thing.
