Well, hello there!

I hope you've been enjoying the month of July, whether that means summer or winter to you. It decidedly means summer here in New Jersey, where it's been blisteringly hot, in between thunderstorms.

The icon for today's post reads "Do more of what makes you happy", and you know what? I've been doing just that. More time with my sweetheart, more time weeding things out of my house, more time doing home improvement projects at both my house and my sweetheart's. And lately, more cooking of fresh food. See, I have this notion (which turns out to be pretty well borne-out by lots of research), that cooking fresh food is good for us.

Which is why I am undertaking to do still more of it, and to try to work with seasonal and local foods, even. But more to the point, I'm trying to get away from too many packaged and processed foods. That blueberry pie I made from scratch last night has to be better for me (and definitely tastes better!) than, say, a Tastykake blueberry pie (which is, by the way, pretty tasty - truth in advertising, etc.). And that homemade banana cake with cream cheese frosting from last week? It's got to be better than something from the freezer section in the grocery store, or even from the store baked goods section. (And they have some pretty great stuff, I must say.) See, my stuff has no preservatives, and no synthetic sweeteners, and no artificial colors or flavors. So even if it isn't, say, the lowest calorie option out there, I reckon it has to be better for us than (most) storebought items. This becomes doubly true when we get to pasta and rice dishes that are made from scratch at home, rather than out of a packet or box mix.

So I got to thinking, maybe I'd offer you a recipe every now and again. Or maybe we could share them, even, if that sounds like more fun. (I'm always in the market for a good recipe, aren't you?)

So in just a few minutes, I'm going to put up another post, with a recipe in it, and we'll see how it goes. Okay? (I'll pretend you said "okay" or at least nodded. Faintly.)

Me, too. It wasn't all that long ago that I realized how much of my email communications with some friends involves what I've been cooking and/or eating (or am planning to fix). I'm not quite to the level of "food-obsessed", but my emails say otherwise.
