Off to college

Maggie, that is. Here we are in her dorm room yesterday, right after most of her stuff got put away and just before we went to lunch at the nearest dining hall, which turned out to be bangin'. (My sweetheart and I both had sushi, although the made-to-order pasta bar and made-to-order stir fry were both somewhat tempting. But we had been hobbits, and had second breakfast on our way to UMASS Amherst, so we didn't eat all that much. Still, it was awesome.)

In case you're wondering, Maggie and I were both just as happy as we look in that photo about her going off to college, and nary a tear was shed by either of us. Because I am of that perverse subset that does not get weepy over my kids' high school graduations or goings off to colleges. It's a happy event, after all, and they are just so happy, and I can remember how happy I was as a teen, that it doesn't have a "bittersweet" feeling to me. (I will have to keep you posted about what happens when they start graduating from college. Because things could conceivably change, right?)

High on this week's list of priorities are things like "cleaning Maggie's room" and "starting a new writing schedule". Because it is time.

I don't weep either. In all honesty, I would think having your kid being is college is something to celebrate. And after all, you're only a phone call away if she needs you.

What is going to be your new schedule? Later this next week, my schedule changes too. Husband is going to be working different hours. My 'quiet' time to write will change. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

Glad to know I'm not alone in my unweepiness.

My new schedule is a bit odd for this week, because the Jewish holidays start, and will be requiring a lot of family and synagogue time for me. However, I made sure to spend an hour on the business side of writing yesterday, and to set aside a couple hours this morning and tomorrow morning for writing as well. Much of this week's time will probably involved getting in touch with myself and figuring out a workable schedule from now on, but I am trying to make sure I set the time aside to get writing work done each day, at least a bit.

Hope your schedule change doesn't prove too jarring for you, and that you don't let it throw you off course!!

I get a little choked up when my kiddos pass certain milestones, but I get what you're saying too. It is a happy time, and it's the way it's supposed to be :) Your M is such a lovely girl!

Thanks, Robin! (And I used to get choked up a lot when they were smaller, and moving from preschool to kindergarten, or kindergarten to first grade, but I seem to have lost that somewhere along the line. I'm sure it will show up once they're getting married, right?)

I'm glad I got to go, too, Jenn - and Maggie seems very happy at school so far!

Thanks, Jeannine! I'll have to have her look you up when you're on campus! (Also, we'll have to hook up when I come up for a visit!!)

If she's into science at all and has a chance to take a course from Lila Gierasch in the Biochemistry department, she should. Lila is awesome!

Not a science girl, but science is required, so she's actually taking microbiology of cancer and AIDS this semester.

You both look really happy. I'm not even weeping over the realization that my son turns fifty next year! I am going "How did this happen!!??" a lot.

I can only imagine that you were a teen mother, because it seems impossible to me that you have a 50-year old. (Says Kelly, who turns 50 in the spring.)

I was 20. Turn 70 in November. It is quite weird... Plan to throw a big party.
