Today's subject line comes from a song that Cinderella sang in the TV version of her story years and years ago. And yes, I sing the song on occasion, but today it came to mind as I was thinking of my new writing room, still coming together at my sweetheart's house, and how I have already put that chair and room to good use.

I've already drafted a brand new picture book manuscript there, that arrived overnight the night before almost intact and entire. It still needs revision, but my first readers agree that the idea works and the draft was really solid - it just needs a bit of spit and shine.

And just yesterday, I started poems for a new poetry collection there. To be fair, the idea arrived the night before while I was falling asleep, but I made sure to do the actual writing down of things in my new writing space. I figure it makes sense to establish a connection in my brain between the room and writing/creativity, and to reinforce it as best I can.

Speaking of my room, the latest addition to its décor is a lovely card I received from my Aunt Martha, herself a fine artist with a show going on in Amherst, New Hampshire at the Amherst Town Library until mid-January. She encouraged me to make sure I spend a few hours alone in that room during the holidays, even with the girls at home. Don't you love other artists/writers who really understand things?

It truly is a good thing to have a room of one's own. Or a corner and a chair.

Here's a really young Lesley Ann Warren, the Cinderella I remember from my childhood, singing "In My Own Little Chair":

Kiva - loans that change lives

Oh gosh, I remember watching this when I was little, too! I was completely enchanted by it.

Did you see the remake starring Brandy a few years back? It was cute, but played for a bit more humor than the original.

I didn't. I didn't want to sully my memory of the original. ;)

Years and years and YEARS ago, I read Virginia Woolf's A ROOM OF ONE'S OWN and it has so stuck with me. There is NOTHING like your writing space, and I agree with your aunt--spend some time in it over the holidays. The girls and you will be happier in your time together if you have a few breaks.

One of the best things my husband ever said to me, when we looked at the house we were going to buy was, "Who needs a dining room?!" or words to that effect! My office has been my happy place for years now.

Becky - It's stuck with me, too. I have a copy packed away here that I was re-reading when I worked on my Austen collection. (It's not directly related, but I had read some of THE MADWOMAN IN THE ATTIC and it reminded me I wanted to re-read Woolf's book. So wonderful.)

As it now stands, I've had more breaks than together time, so I can't really complain, but I do love my new writing room!

Last time that you commented as you, it put you in the "possible spam" folder. Silly LJ!

I am loving it! And am adding a journal to start my writing day with, thanks to a certain someone's influence. Have you read Views From A Window Seat? ;)
