A Valentine's Day Poetry Friday post

First, congratulations to CYBILS winner Amy Ludwig VanDerwater for her spectacular poetry collection, FOREST HAS A SONG. It was my honor and pleasure to be one of the first-round panelists this year, and I was really thrilled with the list we advanced, and am very happy for Amy's win!

Here's "Proposal", one of my favorites from this wonderful collection, just perfect for Valentine's Day:

Proposal
by Amy Ludwig VanDerwater

Marry me.
Please marry me.

A tree frog calls
from tree to tree.
Hoping.
Hopping.
High above.
Crooning.
Plopping.
Finding love.

Pick me now.
Make me your choice.
I'm one great frog
with one strong voice.

Second, I am thankful today and every day for my sweetheart. We celebrate 365 Valentine's Days each year (plus one more in a leap year), but still, it's a blessing to have him in my life.

Finally, I have been looking at the lovely wall calendar I treated myself to for this year. It's from Caldecott honor winner Pamela Zagarenski, and features art each month with poems from Hafiz and Rumi translated by Daniel Ladinsky. This month's poem is "Can Any Beauty Match This?" by Hafiz, and I find myself transfixed today by these lines:

What one heart can do for another heart,
is there any beauty in the world that can match this?

Wishing you beauty in this day, and moments of tenderness.

Amy's book is full of nature poems, and I suspect you will like it a lot. Thank you for the Valentine's Day wish, and nope - not a thing better than having found my true love. Not one single thing.

frogs and love
"I'm one great frog with one strong voice!'

"How dreary to somebody
How public like a frog
To tell you name the livelong day
To an admiring bog."

Poem opposites, but both reflecting feelings I sometimes have--in a frog's voice.

So glad you did pass on Amy and Robbin's book to us, Kelly! A beautiful groups of books that made our work harder for sure. I love Proposal and that Hafiz quote is a special one. The calendar must be wonderful! Happy Valentine's Day!

The calendar is indeed gorgeous, and I'm glad I splurged on it. And it's interesting, because while the short list we passed on to you guys wasn't exactly the same as MY short list, it was easy to get behind. There were SO many great choices this year!

I love how what first seems a beautiful simplicity in Amy's poems opens to so much. How does she do it? Perfect valentines/poetry friday choice!

Your wall calendar sounds absolutely divine. I love Rumi and am smitten by Zagarenski's signature artwork. Thank you also for sharing Amy's poetry from "Forest has a song." Sounds like a winner indeed.

Re: Valentine's Day
Thank YOU, Amy, for the wonderful book. I felt it only right to showcase one of your poems in talking about the book, and "Proposal" fit the day perfectly!! Congratulations (again) on the win!

And the wall calendar is gorgeous. It was a bit of a splurge for me, but I am so glad I got it!

Poetry Friday
Hope you and your sweetheart had a lovely Valentine's Day! Hooray for Amy's book and "Proposal" is the perfect poem to share today. I'm completely jealous of your calendar! Rumi, Hafiz, and Pamela Zagarenski? What could be better? I'm off to see if I can find a copy.

Re: Poetry Friday
Thanks for the Valentine's wishes - we did enjoy the day! You can find the calendar at Pamela's Etsy site, Sacredbee, if she has any left. She has a lovely assortment of cards, there, too, some with Rumi and Hafiz quotes.

I agree, Mary Lee, but in my opinion, any of the finalists would have made an excellent choice. (Plus two others that didn't move on but were on my own short list, because I felt that strongly about them.) It was a fabulous year for poetry collections last year!

Proposal
Love the language of this poem. What better time to talk about a proposal than Valentine's Day?
