Good news Monday

First, and most importantly, I hope that you receive some good news today, wherever you may be. I have an abundance of it today, though one piece I found out about on Friday evening. I am still so happy about it, though, that I am sharing it here.

My chapbook, The Universe Comes Knocking, has been accepted for publication by Maverick Duck Press. Maverick Duck Press is a small press founded in 2005 to "give a voice to undiscovered talent in poetry." They specialize in small, limited-edition print runs of chapbooks, including those of some local poets I really admire, including Kendall Bell, Bruce Niedt, Don Kloss, and Anna Evans, most of whom I've mentioned or featured here on the blog before. I will let you know when it will be available!

I got a paycheck from the Philadelphia Inquirer for the piece I wrote about the Urban Bourbon tour in Louisville, Kentucky. You may recall me mentioning the tour in my vacation-related blog post. Well, I went ahead and wrote up a travel piece on it, and the Inquirer accepted and published it. Here's a link to the online version, which omits the photo I sent along with it. I feel kind of badly about you missing it, so here's the photo:

My sweetheart and I with drinks at the Old Seelbach Bar in Louisville, KY

I'm in menopause. Yes, I am sharing my health news. Bloodtests have confirmed it, etc. I suspected it already based on my expanding midriff, but now it's for real. *Capers about in post-menopausal glee, which looks a lot like sitting at a desk drinking coffee* Now to figure out how to burn more calories/reshape my body so I retain my pearishness and don't go all apple-y. Suggestions, dear friends, for a person who can't do high-impact stuff due to my other health issues (rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia)?

Tell me your good news, please?

I have nothing in particular to share that you don't already know about...I am very excited to have in my hot little hands my next CAN BE... book that comes out next year. Otherwise, just wanted to drop in and say YAY on your lovely news of all kinds. xoxo, Laura Purdie Salas

I think I remember that you're already off gluten? If not, that will help with the menopause issues (many of them, that is).

Good news: it's autumn, such a beautiful time of year :)

Not off gluten. In fact, on occasions when I tried it (essentially, when I tried keeping Passover, which severely curbs bread, etc.), I ended up in a flare with my RA, so I don't intend on trying it unless I'm told I have a gluten issue. But I haven't been having many menopause issues so far (*knocks wood*), apart from a rather overactive menstrual cycle that necessitated me going back on the pill for a bit to keep it from being a near-constant. (Hence, the need for a blood test to see if I could stop the pill. And I can!)

I have always hoped that maybe I'd get an easy menopause to make up for the two very lengthy labors I went through (36 and 31 hours, respectively, with the first one involving back labor the whole time). I am hopeful that I am getting my wish!

Loving your news, but mostly laughing at your including menopause in there. If you get some good exercises for reducing your middle, ahem, um... share them?

Menopause is definitely good news, don't you think? Thus far, "walk more" seems to be the way to go, although yoga and pilates have been suggested as well. I'll keep you posted.
