As You Wish by Cary Elwes & Joe Layden

516Fd4+DlsLI have been listening to As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride lately, and though I'm not yet done the audiobook, I have to take this opportunity to exhort one and all to go and get the audiobook to listen to for themselves. And by "one and all", I really mean "fans of The Princess Bride", although in my experience, that applies to most of my friends.

The reason I chose to get this on audiobook, rather than as a book-book, is that the audio includes not only narration by Cary Elwes, but also bits here and there from others, including William Goldman, Rob Reiner, Wallace Shawn, Mandy Patinkin, Robin Wright, Carol Kane, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, Chris Sarandon . . . well, you get the idea. I'm told that the book comes with a poster and some illustrations, so maybe it's a trade-off, but I am really enjoying hearing everyone's voices and input.

The book is Elwes's story of the making of the film, and includes everything from casting to preparation to table readings to filming. And it is quite a lot of fun to listen to.

I just read this (the physical book), I wish I'd thought of getting the audiobook! I'll have to see if the library has it. Does Cary read it himself?

Cary DOES read it himself. And attempts imitations of Rob Reiner and André the Giant!

I found out about the book on someone else's timeline a while back and had that same reaction!
