Spent a short bit of yesterday getting my breasts examined at the radiologist's, which put me in mind of this poem I wrote a year or so ago, and it being Poetry Friday, I thought I'd (over-?) share:

Mammogram time
by Kelly Ramsdell Fineman

Mammogram time, says
the notice from nobody
at the radiology center,

or at least, nobody signed
it. Still, it's nice that some
anonymous body

cared enough to remind
me to set up an appointment
for the annual breast-

mashing. Who knew the old girls
had so much flesh in them?

I think, Macbeth-like, every

year as they spread like
chicken cutlets between
two glass pressure plates.

"Don't breathe," says
the helpful tech. As if I
could. As if anyone could.

Hoping to be able to breathe fully again by next week. I continue to be in need of additional rest and whatnot following a trip to Maine last weekend. My autoimmune conditions don't really rebound well, as it turns out.

Here's hoping you can all breathe easy this weekend!

Overshare? YOU???
Don't breathe?! When is that ever helpful advice in a medical setting???

Re: Overshare? YOU???
Well, in the case of mammograms, it prevents your breast tissue from moving while the X-rays are taken, so it is somewhat helpful in that context. Or else they have to do it over, and mash your breasts AGAIN!

You'd think in the year 2015 they would have a better way to examine breasts!

I was just saying to Morris that if guys had to lay their junk onto similar equipment and have it flattened out for an exam, there would quickly be better technology . . .

LOL You know, I was going to say that in my last reply, but not as nice as you said it. LOL And you're right!

Eeeeek!
I've had this thought, too.

While running away, screaming...

Oh, Kelly--I love that anonymity of the card, and then the actual person there when you'd rather it all be anonymous. Though that's pry just me transferring my own experience on it! Chicken cutlets. Yes. Oi. xoxo, Laura Purdie Salas

Thanks, Laura! And I agree, there's something a bit surreal about other people handling your breasts, but the tech was so clinical it wasn't at all weird.

Oh, does this poem ever resonate with me! My yearly mammo is fraught with physical and emotional pain. Every year past diagnosis is simultaneously the year it is less and more likely they'll find a reoccurrence. No chicken cutlets here. We're working with overripe lemons, and the one that's been halved hurts with an intensity I can't describe when smashed. (Talk about over sharing!!! Sorry!) I join you in wishing for all women easy breathing, whether after their mammo, or in any other way/shape/form.

Mary Lee: I've had two biopsies in the past, and always become anxious when my exam occurs, even though I was fortunate enough for them to be negative. My breasts are uncomfortable during the exam, but it's not all the way to painful most of the time - my sincere condolences to you that it IS painful, since it seems to me you've been through more than enough already!! I continue to hope for clean scans for you, and easy breathing!

BARED Anthology
Hi, Kelly. I read your post and thought immediately of a poetry anthology about breasts and bras. The call for submissions is still open and I know the editor is actively seeking poems. Here is the call. I hope you'll send this in! http://www.lauramadelinewiseman.com/blog/2015/05/10/cfp-bared-anthology-on-bras-and-breasts-deadline-september-18-2015/

Re: Poetry Friday
So true - it's an annual thing. Still waiting to hear back to find out whether or not I'm at "relief" yet, though I have been trying not to worry!

You've captured the feeling (and pressure) of getting a mammogram perfectly. =)

Nice double meaning on "pressure" there!

Yes, mammograms are almost as much fun as root canal, even for those of us with underachieving boobies.

I believe they are worse if one is small-busted, actually. I don't mind them much, actually.
