Enough: an election poem

Today's poem is written with my poetry sisters and our challenge in mind -- use anaphora, the fine art of rhetorical repetition, in a poem. Think Churchill's "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."

Today's poem is also written with the upcoming election in mind, and with a reminder to you to vote. We need checks and balances to exist in our government, and without your vote, we may not have them.

by Kelly Ramsdell

I am only one,
anxious and afraid.
What can one do?

I am only one,
one voice, one vote.
What can one do?

I am only one,
frustrated, enraged.
What can one do?

I am only one
but so are you.
Join me, we're two.

I am only one,
but we are myriad,
disgusted, outraged.
Watch what we will do.

Yes!! DH and I were just having a discussion last night about whether a single vote can actually count, or make a difference. Your 4th and 5th stanzas say it all. Strength in numbers. Each voice is powerful.

Based on something I saw on Rachel Maddow last night, it would appear that one vote could be the difference in a number of races. And that a handful of votes could make a huge difference in North Dakota, where the GOP just (effectively) disenfranchised a ton of Native Americans by making a massive voter ID policy change too close to the election.

Yes! this is just the message we all need to hear to bring us together. Love the short stanzas and the repeat of the most essential point - only one, until you join me!

Love your "turn" in this poem:

I am only one
but so are you.
Join me, we're two.

And yes, I've early voted! I always do, since I have to vote absentee.

I'm voting in person tomorrow. And I hope they have stickers again. Last year was the first time we had them here in my town!
